Baptism

A. Why you need Baptism?

1. Because Jesus commanded it – Mathew 28: 18-20
2. Because Jesus obeyed it – Mathew 3: 13-16, Mark 1: 9-11, LK 3: 21-32
3. To fulfil the righteousness – Mt 3:15
4. We may live a new life- Rom 6:1-4
5. Dead to sin, alive in Christ and live for God – Rom 6: 10
6. Repent and be baptised – Acts 2: 38,
It is change of mind, thoughts, attitude, habit, behaviour, and
actions.
Repent, then turn to God – Acts 3:19

B. How do you take Baptism?

The word Baptism derived from the Greek word of “Baptizo” which means “immersion” and definitely it is not sprinkling of water on ones head.
Mt 3: 16 very clearly say about it “Jesus was baptized and as soon as “He came out of the water”.
Mark 1: 10 - “As Jesus was coming out of the water”

In Philip and the Ethiopian’s story we read about the water baptism
Acts 8:38 – “Then both Philip and the eunuch “went down into the water”

Acts 8:39 – “ When they came up out of the water”

John 3: 23 - say Now John also was baptising at Aenon near Salim, because there was plenty of water. If it were a sprinkling of water he would not have looked for a place where there is plenty of water.

C. Who can give the Baptism?

Matthew 28: 16-20 – Jesus gave the great commission to His disciples to preach the Gospel and Baptise them in the name of the father and of the son and of the Holy Spirit.
The elected and the chosen ones of God (Pastors, Evangelist and Apostles) can give Baptism.


D. What follows after the Baptism?

Acts – 2: 41-47

1. V 41 – Those who accepted his message were baptized
2. V 42 – They devoted themselves to the apostles teaching. Why? To grow in the word of God, 1 Peter 2: 1- Spiritual milk, which is the word of God.
3. V 42 – They devoted themselves to the fellowship. You need fellowship of Christian brethren.
4. V 42 – They devoted themselves to breaking of bread which is the
Holy communion.
1 Cor 11: 23-26 – “Do this in remembrance of me”.
V 25 – It is a new blood covenant with Jesus Christ.
V 26 – For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup you
proclaim the Lords death until he comes.
5. V 42 – They devoted themselves to the prayer life, two-way communications with the Lord by reading the word of God and conversation through prayers.
6. V 44 – Unity among the believers
7. V 45 – Sharing our possessions
8. V 46 – Doing it with sincere heart
9. V 47 – You can expect an automatic expansion of the church.

E. Baptism of the Holy Spirit

1. Jesus Received the Holy Spirit after the Baptism – Matthew 3: 16,17,
Mark 1: 10,11,Luke 3: 21,22
2. John the Baptist testified the Holy Spirit – John 1: 33, Luke 3: 16,
Mark 1:8, Matthew 3: 11.
3. The Holy Spirit was a promise of the Heavenly Father – Joel 2: 28,29,
Acts 2: 17-19.
4. Jesus himself promised the Holy Spirit – Luke 24: 49, John 20: 22,
Acts 1: 4-7.
5. The Holy Spirit descended on the day of Pentecost – Acts 2: 1-12.
6. For a clear study please read 1Corinthians chapters 12, 13 and 14.
7. If you would have received the water baptism you need the baptism of the Holy Spirit – Acts 19: 1-7.
8. If you would have received the Holy Spirit you need water baptism –
Acts 10: 44-48.
