Fatigue was setting in. It was only day 2 of a rainy, cold Spring Break, and my children would rather be having school! As a home schooling mother, I needed the break more than them!
As the children were busy playing a game, I stole away to my private oasis-the bathroom! As I entered my place of rest the thought, “I wish someone would clean this place,” ran through my head. I paid it no heed. Soon I was under a soothing spray of hot water. Why stop there? The apartment owners had just installed massage shower heads, right? Why not go all out? I reached up and turned the dial all the way from spray to massage. I cringed as soon as the water began pelting my back. Well, maybe, if I just took a deep breath and tried to relax my muscles, it wouldn’t feel like it was going to take my skin off! Nope, wasn’t workin’! I fumbled with slippery hands against fire hose pressure to return the dial to Spray. S-P-R-A-Y; oh didn’t that seem like a dreamy land of delight! Of course, as soon as I got hold of the dial and turned it back, the water began to run cold. Turning off the water, I stepped out and grabbed a towel.
I hadn’t reached my relaxation point yet. (Gee, I wonder why?) The task of getting dressed was too much to bear. Let’s see I needed something…something like….Body Lotion! That was it! Moisture for my neglected skin, creamy bliss in a bottle just begging me to indulge. I twisted off the lid slowly in anticipation. The spicy vanilla scent came wafting up awakening my senses. Oooohhhhh….the warm and inviting aroma, like fresh baked bread, was soothing as I slathered my legs. I went for another dollop for my arms, when reality came crashing through my wistful thoughts.
“BURNING! BURNING!” was the warning that flashed through my mind in glowing red letters. My eyes began watering and my nostrils were on fire! Instantly I grasped the doorknob and started fanning in cool, fresh air into the steamy, over spiced bathroom. UGH!! I guess you can have too much of a good thing!
I started getting dressed. Oh! I can’t forget deodorant. As I grabbed mine out of the medicine cabinet and popped off the lid, that familiar “shower fresh” scent reached my nose mingled in with “vanilla too spicy” body lotion. YUCK! “Oh well, I can’t do anything about that now,” I thought as I pressed on into my routine. “Sport” scented hair gel and “fruity” scented make-up completed my stress creating aromatherapy session. I still think it was missing something though, maybe a small child with a nasty diaper banging on the door. Yes, I think that would have made it complete!
As I staggered down the stairs and took my place of comfort on the couch, the kids looked up at me from their game. The youngest just smiled at me. I smiled back. Funny how a smile can just warm your heart and make the world seem right. Peace was settling in. I looked to my oldest to smile at her. She smiled back at me and said, “What’s that smell?”
