Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold your son!” Then He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home. John 19:25-27
These verses have been an inspiration to me that have lead to many prayers since I first read them. The picture painted in these verses is so vivid to me. Imagine our Lord hanging on the cross out of love for each one of us and yet in the midst of the pain He shows such love and concern for His mother. Probably the most precious person on earth to Him, someone He cherishes, and we see Him entrusting her care to this disciple. I remember searching and studying to discover who this disciple was and learned it was John the Beloved. Imagine John standing there seeing this Man whom he knows to be the Son of God being crucified. His whole world must have felt turned upside down. Suddenly, the Master says, “Take care of My precious mother- take care of her as your very own.” The Lord entrusted him with someone very dear and precious to His heart. Imagine how John must have felt – humbled and thrilled. He was considered worthy of this task. What an awesome event – to know the Lord trusted him with something precious.
This still stirs such a longing in my heart to surrender my life to the Lord and become who He intended, so that one day He would entrust something precious in my care. Some days I feel closer to that goal and others that goal seems so far away as I deal with life’s issues. Yet I have never lost the desire to see this prayer fulfilled in my life.
We don’t need to desire to walk in someone else’s calling, or obtain someone else’s gift. We simply need to seek Him for the call in our life, even if its being a doorkeeper as spoken of in Psalms 84. A doorkeeper to me is a fantastic call – opening the door and showing the people how to enter into the presence of the Lord.
Are we willing to lay aside self to find this place? For each one, the area of entrustment is different, the gift is different, and the call is different. Some are songbirds, some are dancers, some are parents with little ones to teach and train, and the list goes on. There is no question in my heart, He longs for those who are willing to say, “Use me, Lord! I long to be the person that You know can be entrusted with something precious.”
