TEN COMMANDMENTS

Quick now, can you recite the Ten Commandments? As Christians, we are called to live by the Commandments given us by God. However, if we cannot name all ten of them, how can we follow them?

The Ten Commandments can be broken into two segments; the four that deal directly with God, and the remaining six that deal with life and living.

The first commandment is: Thou shall have no other gods before me. That means that God must be first in our life, before our spouse, our children, our family, and our jobs. Is He number one?

In Matthew 22:34-40, Jesus proclaims that we must “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.”

The second commandment deals with false idols. In 1 Samuel 5:3-5, we are reminded that even false gods bow down before our great God. Do we worship only God, or do we have graven images and false idols that take our attention?

In the third commandment, we must use God’s name properly. That means we are not to curse or use His name carelessly. Think about that television show we watch that misuses His name. Do we continue to watch it and tell ourselves it’s okay? Or do we stop watching it and proclaim the reason?

Here is a good one: Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Christians have so many excuses for not attending church, such as I can’t find one I like, I can’t get up that early, I must meet my friends for breakfast, or it’s the only day I can sleep late. Think about this: does God say “I’m too tired or too lazy” to want to be with us?

Commandments five through ten give us rules by which we should live our daily lives. Honoring our parents is the last “positive” command. The remaining five state thing we “shall not” do.

If you cannot remember them, take the time now to read the Ten Commandments and search for ways to improve yourself for God.

Just in case you are still struggling, here is a short listing of the commandments given to us by God, as recorded in Exodus 20:1 -

1. You shall have no other gods before me
2. You shall not make for yourselves an idol
3. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God
4. Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy
5. Honor your father and your mother
6. You shall not murder
7. You shall not commit adultery
8. You shall not steal
9. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor
10. You shall not covet



The next time someone asks you to name the Ten Commandments, will you be ready?
