Why is waiting so hard to do? And how do you rest while you are waiting when you don't even know what you are waiting for?
I am learning, and it's not an easy thing to do. But then, learning something meaningful that is altering your life usually doesn't come easy. It's not a natural inclination to be patient and to be happy while being patient.
To my natural mind, it's an oxymoron to happily wait. Get real! I want it now! When I finally get it, then and only then will I be happy.
You're probably wondering, "What is she talking about?" You're probably even thinking that maybe you should just skip over my colum today and move on to the next submission.
I can't move on. I have to wait.
I'll try to explain myself.
I've been preparing to go into full-time missionary work in Jamaica for the past year. I was expecting to go by April 1. But my Boss (God) has told me to "wait," that the time is not right just yet.
I feel like I've been pregnant for nine months and now there's no baby!
I have been studying the words "wait" and "tarry" in the Bible, specifically Habakkuk 2:3, which says, "For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry."
I've also been studying the words "still" and "know" from Psalm 45:10, which says, "Be still and know that I am God."
I had no idea that these four words were inter-related unti I began studying what the Lord has impressed upon me. My heart did not want to hear the word "wait." I rebelled inside. My flesh literally cried out, "But Lord, why wait? I want to go NOW!"
I have, throughout the year, been endeavoring to raise financial support as missionaries have to do. I knew in the beginning that this was going to be a walk of faith. That was all right with me. I have faith. "I know Whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I have committed unto Him against that day." (2 Timothy 1:12)
But you must heed the still small voice of the One your heart longs to please when He speaks to you, "Wait." So, I wait. And as I wait, I wait with hope and expectation and promise. So, my waiting will not be in vain. "God makes all things beautiful in His time." (Ecclesiastes 3:11)
When the time is right, everything will fall into place. Knowing that, I can happily wait. I can have rest and peace as I wait. "What time I am afraid, I will trust in Thee." (Psalm 56:3)
There are many things in the works -- things that I hadn't thought about before, that He is revealing to me, little by little.
"He who began a good work in you is faithful to complete it!" (Philippians 1:6)
The Lord knows the desires of my heart. I trust Him with these desires. I trust no one else but Him with the self that I have worked so hard to find and discover.
He tells me that "they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles." (Isaiah 40:31) So, one of these days I will soar because I have listened to His voice that for now is saying to me "wait." I will soar to new heights upon His wind beneath my wings.
Lord, give me patience to be patient. I am learning that vision requires endurance. Though it tarries, I will wait for it. It also requires discipline.
"My soul, wait thou only upon God: for my expectation is from Him." (Psalm 62:5)
Psalm 90:17, "And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it."
Yep, He makes ALL things beautiful in His time. I can't wait! Opps!
