Love Makes the World go ‘Round


What do Perry Como, Paul Anka, Madonna, Ashlee Simpson, and Quincy Jones have in common? Over 40 years each made popular three very different songs titled “Love Makes the World go ‘Round.” Is love really that important?

The New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy states “Love is the principal force behind human life.” According to teacher Wrio Russell “Love is the silken thread that ties up the bundles of every aspect of our living. Love, the pure power of (unconditional) love makes the world go round in the way it should.” Love exhilarates. Love motivates. Love breaks hearts. Love transforms. Love is universal.

What is love? Four facets of love is expressed by the Greek words Philía, love between friends, Storgé, familial or family love, Éros, sexual attraction and sensual desire, and Agápe, Divine love.

Love is a feeling. Love is a decision. Love is a deliberate action. Love is unconditional. Love is behavior such as consideration, unselfishness, patience and kindness. True love is neither jealous nor rude -- not irritable or easily offended. Love is not proud or afraid to apologize and admit error. Love doesn’t keep a list of how it has been wronged or demand its own way. Love accepts responsibility and doesn’t shame and blame others for it’s own actions, reactions or inactions. Love is tested by loving the unlovable.

Love makes truth a fundamental value. Love is overjoyed when truth prevails. Love eschews personal affectation, pretence, falsehood and deceit. Love is not happy when another suffers misfortune or injustice. Love is loyal, faithful and hopeful. Love endures in every circumstance and does not fail during adversity.

Experiencing love gives meaning to life. Loving friends, family, a partner and our Creator brings joy and fulfillment, and is life’s ultimate value. One’s capacity to experience love is limited only by one’s willingness to love. Pursue love and become a world class lover.
