Poetry
The Castle of My Heart
By David Ian
Amid acrid smoke
Thick ash and soot
Lay drawbridge gates
Burned and broken
Stone-skinned walls
Rubbled and ruined
Strong rock and mortar
Pounded and pulvered
Bulwark mounds
Leveled and lowered
My keep once strong
Battered and breeched
Through all my defenses
Now you have reached
My resolve and resistance
Now you have beat
The depths of the sepulcher
My final retreat
Here’s where I lie
Defenseless am I
Awaiting you there
Naked and bare
I quiver and shake
Yours for to take
You stand and you smirk
My neck to your dirk
So easy it was
So easy it’d be
To the victor the spoils
Or just slay me
And then there you go
Walk away satisfied
You call this freedom?
I rather I’d died
And so I’ll rebuild
My keep and my wall
And shore up defenses
‘Til next time you call

Your imagery is powerful. The alliteration scattered throughout is effective. The ending was unexpected but because of that, leaves the reader pondering. Well done.
