with a shake and a stare
he’s holding tight
his trusty teddy bear
too bad he has
to pretend
that bear is
his best friend

there is a little girl
in her bedroom
wondering when’s dinner
but she can't assume
if tonight
she will find
a peaceful word
or a meal this time

I wish I could say
this is as bad as it gets
but you and I know
better than this
in many a child
there hides a pain
with ache too dark
to explain

if you don't want to hear it
well that's too bad
there's more broken
than a song that's sad
broken tears
are just the way
many children
start their day

while I am being honest
you must know
some things get worse
as they go
somebody gets hurt
with a scream and shout
and it can really sting
when dad finds out

some little ones
hear and see
worst scenes
that you'd find on TV
then at home
worse than that
there is real-life
combat

little sis thought
to flirt was okay
but when big brother’s
friends had their way
her own mirror said
she was to blame
she never saw herself
quite the same

girls like her
masquerade scars
they want acceptance
from boys in cars
if only someone
would show they cared
she wouldn’t mope around
sad and scared

an ocean away
there's another tale
where girls in Ghana
are sold for sale
their childhood robbed
their soul they gave
the tragic true life of
a Troski slave

these stories make me
mad and sad
with all the blessings
I have had
I vow to make
one big stand
with my prayers my heart
and my hands

it doesn't have to
be a sad song
love done right
can overcome wrong
forgiveness can
turn hearts around
but someone has
to start the sound

I’m starting right here
prayers from my heart
to be a difference
yeah that's a start
it may be a long road
to help others cope
but with faith in God
we can hope

some grown ups make
mistakes a lot
whether they admit it
or not
its up to us
to open up again
a new love legacy
can begin

so join me
in this anthem song
together we can help
kids grow up strong
we can give hugs
patiently
we can help set
their dreams free

they may say
hey it's a cliché
that loves the answer
in the world today
so if this is going
to make any sense
the world should see some
new evidence

one more word
you’ve got to know
if you're in the trenches
then you're my hero
even though
the workers are few
tonight I thank God
just for you

so let’s enter
in this sacred sound
together our echoes
can bust what’s bound
we can give love
genuinely
we can help set
their dreams free
