“A man can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in his work. This too, I see, is from the hand of God, for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment.”—Ecclesiastes 2:24-25 (NIV)

As a person who inspects other people’s work for a living, I am amazed how many people do not take satisfaction in a job well done. They are constantly looking for the next opportunity. I blame it partly on the “show me the money” attitude in popular culture today.

There is nothing wrong with thinking about the future. Dreaming about the future is fine, but life is what happens when we are living it. I take the craftsman’s approach.

I work at the task at hand. I hone my skill through doing it and learning about it. I take satisfaction in what was done at the end of the day.

It is not to say that I don’t prepare for the future. I prepare, but I’m not obsessed with it. I am content with the here and now. I know that whatever plan God has for me, this is where I am meant to be. I’m preparing for a heavenly reward.

There is something to be said about the simple life. There is something to be said about being content with your station. To tell you the truth some of the richest people I know do not have swollen bank accounts. These people are content with a good meal and family.

Riches alone cannot make one happy. Without God’s love filling us, we cannot find true enjoyment in the simple life. Not knowing God’s love may be the reason that so many people feel discontent with life.
