Greater Than All

John 10:22-42 addresses the Jews unbelief in Jesus. But more than that, it tells us about love relationship between Christ and His followers. The story opens up with Jesus walking through Solomon’s Colonade (at the temple) during the Feast of Dedication (Hanukkah). A group of Jews approach him and confront him about his ministry. They want to know if he is the Christ, why can’t he just say so.

And Jesus answered them, “I did tell you, but you do not believe. The miracles I do in my Father’s name speak for me, but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.” (John 10:25-30 NIV)

There has to be a reason Jesus made mention of God being greater than all. I mean, surely the Jews already knew that God is the greatest force in the universe, that he created all things. Isn’t that what the Jews preached?

I believe Jesus was trying to remind the Jews that as much as mankind would like to grab the kite string and guide God to where they think he should be, it just isn’t going to happen. God is in charge. He makes the rules, hence the reference to God’s people being sheep-like in their faith.

God is greater than science, for He is the first and last scientist, creating all that can be studied and understood.

God is greater than the educator, for He is the first and last teacher, always working to show mankind the difference between mortality and immortality.

God is greater than the world leaders, for He alone holds the power to make their days long or short, their reign successful or tragic.

God is greater than all, and His followers must be quick to reject the notion that we can leash God up and take Him where we think He should go. Jesus was quick to point out to the Jews that they didn’t really believe in the Greater Than All God that was the Father. They, in effect, wanted to worship a God that played by their rules, worked in their time frame, and sent a Savior that had to fit their mold.

Today’s followers of the Christian faith must never lose sight of Jesus’s lesson in John 10:22-40. We don’t mold God to fit our fellowship with Him. He is molding us to understand the fellowship we need with Him. And He will always remain “Greater Than All.”
