The Unthinkable

“I have a job for you and I want you to organise the choir.”

“Do you want the chamber choir or the full works?” asked the angel responsible for the worshipping hosts.

“I want the fullest choir you can give me. I want about ten thousand top-notch, all-singing, all dancing angels to sing at the top of their voices.”

“Do you mind sir, if I ask what this is all about?”

Gabriel smiled.

“We have an announcement to make. A very special one.”

“Just get the choir together and have them sitting down. I will be along shortly.”

The choir master left wondering what on earth, or in heaven for that matter, could be so important as to require such a large gathering. Nevertheless he knew better than to question Gabriel. Orders were orders. He just couldn’t imagine what could be coming up… or going down.

The assembled angels stood to attention when Gabriel entered. He had no need of microphones to address such a gathering for his voice could carry for miles. Gabriel looked around contentedly. Yes, he thought to himself. That should do the trick, although it might scare the life out of the shepherds.

“You have been called together for a very special task this evening”, he began.

“You will announce the birth of the Saviour of men. Jesus will become an infant.”

There was an angelic gasp follow by a perturbed silence of disbelief.

Gabriel could sense the shock and repeated the message. The Master will be born as a baby. That’s why you haven’t seen him around. He has been a growing foetus for the past nine months of time on earth.

Still no movement. Eventually the choir master ventured a phrase, but all he could manage was an incoherent mumble.

“So this is the Master plan…,” said someone from the front row.

“That’s it, replied Gabriel.” His name shall be called Jesus.

Jesus, they whispered. It is a very special sound when ten thousand angels whisper the name of Jesus.

But there was more. He would be born in a stable and a feeding trough would be his bed.

There was a subdued wonder among the angels that night as they prepared for the announcement they never dreamed possible. God becoming one with His creation. Becoming one of them.

They assembled on a hillside in Judea, in the open country. There weren’t many around, just a group of shepherds looking after their sheep.

Just as Gabriel had thought, the shepherds panicked when they saw the choir appearing, that’s why he had sent someone ahead to prepare them.

Already, with just the choir master, they were nearly physically sick with fear. The choir master recognised that this would be beyond their comprehension.

“I told you we shouldn’t have eaten that stew,” he heard one them say.

“How can we all be hallucinating together?” said another.

“I told you it’s the stew!”

When the full choir burst into song they fell off their seats like they had been blown away by an explosion of sound and vision.

“This is real,” said the lead shepherd, trying hard to keep his stew down. “We’d better go and find this baby in Bethlehem. Let’s get out of here!”

And so they found him. They nearly fell over themselves to get into the stable. They told Mary and Joseph about what they had seen and heard. They were relieved to see that they quietly nodded in understanding confirmation. No they weren’t losing their minds. This was for real.

The Creator had become a hungry, helpless human.

Now that really was something to sing about!
