“Give Me a Break”

Give me a break today, Lord; not a McDonald’s break, nor a Coca-Cola, “pause that refreshes break,” or even a break that is an extra measure of grace for when the world gets in my face and I clench my teeth and say, “Oh for heaven’s sake…GIVE ME A BREAK!”

Rather, Lord, give me a break in time…a time when I can, like You, go away to a quiet place and come apart before I come apart.

Then…in quiet solitude, I will ask from You, Lord, “Give me a break.”

Let me feel your presence breaking into my body, mind, soul, and spirit. Break me of my self-sufficiency. Break me of my pride. Press into me, until the hardness of the walls I have built around myself, for protection, crumble and be reduced to rubble. Break me down to tears from the callousness that has layered my heart, to people unlike myself, to those who do not know you, those whom I have never taken the time to understand and be Jesus to them.

Break me of the stubbornness of my own self, when it is enforced by the screams of the flesh, the shouts of the world, and the hissing of satan in my ears. They all join forces to wage war and sway me from the straight and narrow path that entice me to go my own way. Break my heart because of the grief I have brought to your precious Holy Spirit; let me feel the full weight of my sin against the beauty of your holiness, and grant that I come to full repentance.

Break into my spirit and set it free to live in faith and trust again. Break the bondage of poor habits, which have been engraved on my mind since childhood, and have left me shackled to the lies and deceit of the enemy.

And …as I lay broken at your feet, lift me up and put me together again, and send me out strengthened to accomplish Your will.

“…he said to them, ‘Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.’”

Mark 6:31b (NIV)

A strong piece of writing, inspired by the Holy Spirit. You wrote this piece without knowing that, soon, the spirit would use it to provide affirmation to a friend.
The power of words, spoken through artists willing to let the Holy Spirit lead can change lives. Keep trusting and keep writing Jan!
