Blueprint For Conquering Fear

On Christmas, 2005, Gwen Watson, 17, received a puppy as a present from her parents. One day after receiving the little dog, Gwen learned that the cocker spaniel feared the sound of the family vacuum cleaner. Often the vacuum and Gwen would surprise her by coming in the room where the puppy slept to dust and clean. When this happened, she immediately open her eyes, her tail would drop between her legs, and she would dart out of the room in a panic.

Knowing her puppy was afraid of the vacuum cleaner, Gwen would speak to Crissy in her most gentle, reassuring tone of voice. “It’s okay Crissy. Trust me. Nothing is going to hurt you! I am here for you.” Yet no matter what Gwen said or did would cause her puppy to not run in fear of the sound of a vacuum cleaner. This event happened again and again. Then the day came when Crissy would see Gwen or a family member in a ho-hum fashion and continue whatever it was that she was doing.

Gwen learned something from her puppy’s response to the vacuum cleaner. That is, you cannot hide, run or drown fears with alcohol, drugs or sex. A person must face up to what causes them their fears. Crissy ran to hide for nearly a year but now the puppy can claim victory over her most deadly of enemies—the vacuum cleaner.

Like her puppy, Gwen has learned to listen to her Master when He comes to reassure her when people, places or things (real or imagined) come to bring fear and panic in her life.

If there is something that causes fear or panic, remember Crissy’s courage—she conquered, what caused her her fear by trusting the word of her mistress.
God will do the same for anyone who puts their trust in Him and His promises of unconditional love, mercy and reconciliation.
