Lighting the Way
by Dan Blankenship

Time after time, the Bible makes references to “light” when comparing good to evil. One such comparison, John 3:19-21 (NIV), tells us that, “This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen, plainly that what he has done has been done through God.”

If you want to see a lucid comparison in today’s world of how evil avoids the light, drive by any large automobile dealership in America. What will you see? - A well-lit parking lot full of new cars. What will you not see? – Car thieves breaking into those new cars.

I work directly across the street from a huge BMW dealership. Every night, I notice how bright the lot full of cars is, and I wonder if any other human being who drives by the car lot thinks about the deterrent power of the light and its effectiveness night after night. Thieves, vandals, and mischievous juveniles avoid this lot for fear their deeds will be seen. They know that evil is exposed by light and covered up by darkness.

People who embrace evil as a way of life actually understand the cover of darkness is a friend that they need in order to exist. Spiritual darkness is no different. People who have rejected the Gospel shy away from people who willingly accept its purifying light. In fact, atheists and agnostics find comfort in fellowship the same way Christians do. If a group who believes Christianity to be a deception has ever verbally assaulted you, you know exactly what I am talking about. Atheism recruits members with the same enthusiasm of Christianity.

And without faith in an absolute direction, an unquestionable goal if you will, one is free to design his own destiny. Faith in a supreme, sovereign Creator creates a blinding light of righteousness that cannot be ignored, sidestepped, or bargained with. Believing no such foremost exists, let alone is concerned with the daily affairs of man, is a way to shroud human decisions with a blanket of darkness.

So the next time you pass by that well-lit automobile dealership, may you fully grasp why the comparison of light and darkness is used time and time again in the Bible, for it is a likeness that accurately displays that battle between good and evil in a fallen world.
