Many of us know that famous statement by Sir Winston Churchill in 1940. “Never in the field of human conflict has so much been owed by so many to so few.”
He was referring to the Royal Air Force in the crucial months of August and September, 1940. The Nazi Luftwaffe (Air Force) was attempting to soften up Great Britain in preparation for an invasion.
The primarily British Air Force was aided by some volunteer foreign nationals. They were mostly young, in the prime of life. Though outnumbered in aircraft and personnel, the pilots used their machines with skill, showing great courage and determination. They flew until exhausted, going up in their Spitfires again and again. They fought so valiantly (though many died, some badly burned) that Adolf Hitler abandoned that strategy and also his invasion plan to use ground forces. The British people remained free – this writer as a child was one – largely due to the pilots’ efforts.
In eternity, Churchill’s pronouncement could be applied by those in heaven. Thousands will realize if someone hadn’t taken the time and trouble to approach them about Jesus, they wouldn’t be in heaven. So many will have owed so much to so few.
The pilots’ heroism ought to be an inspiration to those Christians in safe, rich, comfortable western countries where there is very little risk of death in witnessing, unlike the brave airmen of 1940.
We are not going to be shot at, machine-gun bullets whizzing past our ears, for talking about Jesus and His great salvation. The pilots fought for an earthly cause; we should be fighting a spiritual enemy, for an eternal cause. Yet where is our heroism today? Do we really believe what the Bible says? Where are Christ’s volunteers?
It’s time to stand up for Jesus; to get out of the holy huddling, Christian jargon and inertia that so monopolizes today’s Christianity. We have to picture the unsaved people screaming as they go into the lake of fire described in Revelation 20:15. It ought to motivate us to get out of our comfortable Saturday shopping, meandering around the mall. It should galvanize us to abandon the armchair and switch off the TV. It should cause us to pick up the phone and say “Hey Joe, sorry, I can’t go fishing at the weekend, got something more important to do.”
Church leaders (do they deserve the title?) must stop putting on church concerts, socials and barbecues and get on with the instruction of Jesus in Mark 16:15: “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.” Would someone please tell them “all the world” is outside the church doors! Also, they have to get the youth group into action witnessing for Jesus. They are the church’s future.
No matter what the church leaders do, every one of us is personally accountable to God (Romans 14:12). Are you, dear reader, among “the few” Churchill spoke of, in terms of spreading the gospel? If you already are – praise God.
