The Adventures of Eddy Eagle
Chapter 2
Eddy grew rapidly and soon he was climbing around in the cage looking for a way out. He wanted to see the sky and the trees. Finely an outdoor cage was built for him.
The egg hatched and when the little eagle was strong enough he was put in with Eddy. At first the young eagles were not sure they liked the idea. But soon they were talking to each other.
At mealtime, Eddy did not want to share at all. Little Ella would not have gotten to eat much if it were left up to big brother. The handlers learned to feed the young eagles on opposite ends of the cage, that way Little Ella was able to get her share. In the wild the smaller bird would sometimes die, because of older ones taking all the food.
Even though the new pen was large and Eddy could see the sky and trees, Eddy still wanted out. He was always looking for a place to wiggle out of. One day he had his chance the gate had not been fastened good. Eddy worked and worked until the latch opened. Out he hopped, it felt good to just know he was free at last. He was walking around on the ground, when a large cat saw him. The cat began to creep closer and closer, getting ready to pounce. Then Eddy turned and saw him, with a squawk he tried to run, but his wings were so big it made running difficult. So he flapped them at the cat and was pleased to see the cat back off. He couldn't run fast enough to get away, so when the cat backed off he got brave and ran at the cat squawking and flapping his wings. Mr. Cat had never seen anything like that, he wasn't sure if it was a danger or not so he ran for the nearest tree.
Eddy was very proud of himself, until a large spotted dog, came around the corner to see what all the noise was about. Old Spot was much larger than the cat. Eddy knew at once he was in trouble this time. He tried not to show his fear, he could tell the dog would not be as easily frightened as the cat had been. Old Spot was really more curious than anything he walked up to Eddy and gave a sniff. Just when Eddy reached out to peck him on the nose, Spot turned and wondered over under the tree and lay down.
Eddy decided it was time to return to the safety of the cage. He found it was easier to get out of than back in. He had to climb up the outside of the cage to reach the opening. He just made it back inside when one of the care takers, came by and noticed the gate open. They did not know Eddy had been on an adventure.
Mr. Cat sat in the tree watching, Old Spot lay under the tree napping and waiting to see what happened. Little Ella scolded Eddy, and Eddy acted as if he didn't hear her. Everyone settled down for a nice nap.
All at once Little Ella gave a squawk, Eddy woke suddenly to see a large snake in the cage with them. It appeared to be ready to strike at Little Ella. Mother Eagle would have grabbed the snake and pulled its head off. The young eagles could not do that. Instead they made so much noise the ranger came out to check on things. Seeing the snake, the ranger grabbed a large club, opened the walk in gate and killed him.
The young eagles had learned some important lessons. They had learned, some places were safer than others, they learned that sometimes you need help. Eddy learned sometimes the things you do, you think are only fun, will get you in trouble. Eddy now saw another way to get out and in the cage. He was already planning his next adventure. As soon as he was rested Eddy was going to check out the big walk in door. It looks like Eddy will have to learn things the hard way. By getting in trouble over and over. I hope you are not like that. But can learn some things at least, by listening, watching and believing your parents had to learn the same things you do. They can make learning easier if you will let them.
