All of my life has been spent in search of the one in control. For forty some odd years, I have fought to have control in almost every life situation. You know the old adage, “if I don’t do it, it won’t get done or it won’t get done right.” I grew up believing this to be true. What has it left me with? Stress, depression, and more stress.

Six years ago, I realized that each and every time I fought to be in control of a situation, I was defeating God’s work in my life. I had to learn the hard way that I have never been in control. He is the One in control.

He allowed me to keep trying to drive the outcome of the opportunities in my life. I am sure He spent many hours shaking His head in disbelief. “When will she ever learn?”

Have you ever had one of those moments when something happened and you can remember years later where you were? Events like the World Trade Center terrorist attacks, Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination, or the day the first teacher in space and her colleagues lost their lives in the Challenger explosion? For me, those dates are written in my memory and I can tell you where I was when I heard the news. Learning to give up control in my life was one of those days.

In January of 2000 so many things in my life were burdening me to the point that I wasn’t able to function effectively at work, at home, anywhere. I took a drive down to the beach where I often go to think and pray. It was a bitterly cold day, yet I took the path down to the frozen waters edge. I looked heavenward, fell to my knees and just cried out to my Father. “Abba, I can’t handle being in control any longer. Life is just too hard. I am messing it all up trying to fix things. Help me Father. Please take control of my life.”

Almost as soon as I finished praying, I felt a peace that I had never felt before. In my mind I heard Him say, “What took you so long child?” I knew from that moment, that He would be in control of my life from then on.

In the Bible God promises us a peace that passes all understanding and I have personal knowledge of that peace. Do you? If not, why not let go and let Him carry your burdens and captain your ship through this life?
