I was working one summer for a Wilderness Camp called, “Peak Adventures” in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. We had hiked down the AT trail one day with a beautiful clear blue sky over our heads. As we were setting up camp the beautiful clear day turned into a wonderful mountain night sky filled with millions of stars decorating the evening. So we decided to not set up our tents. We slept in our sleeping bags enjoying the night skies. It was a night in the mountains in which you felt like you can reach out and touch the stars.
I was awakened early in the morning to a huge surprise! A raccoon had wandered into our bivy site and decided to explore for food. We had safely tied our food in a bear safe spot between two trees but the little bandit was not to be deterred. I must have devoured my dinner like a starving ogre. Because, I had leftover food stored in my mustache.
So I awoke to the awful feeling of the wet tongue of a raccoon removing tiny pieces of trail-mix from my facial fuzz. I screamed in panic and hid my face in my sleeping bag. When I fearfully looked out of my sleeping cocoon, the little trash can crawler was gone.
So what could be a good life lesson for such a story? Well, I am so thankful that I enjoyed the stars. Every good thing has a price. A hike may mean meeting mosquitoes, hike anyway! A kayak ride may mean that you get wet, Kayak anyway! A bike ride may mean a flat tire, ride anyway! Never let the possibility of a raccoon kiss keep you from enjoying life.
