Larry Lilly's Letter Monday January 30, 2006

My friend Kenny Clarkson told me that his literary agent had good news and bad news for him. Being the grand soul that he is, Kenny asked for the good news first. It seems that at a book sale the agent had told a man that after his death Kenny's books would most likely be worth many times the current value and a few would be classics. The inquisitor bought several hundred copies. Elated at this news Kenny asked who the wise buyer was. His agent then gave him the worst news possible in two words, "Your doctor."

Such is life, knowing that upon our passing some will benefit, many of whom have no relationship to us, such as government getting its paws in the pot, something we have slaved over suddenly becoming very valuable ala Van Gough, or a scummy man marrying the girl of our dreams to get the insurance money. I think it would be alright for me to marry well if the Lord takes Joyce first, but I think she should join a cloistered group and pray and mourn for me.

And the very thought of my doctor or many lawyers prospering after my demise is revolting. The doctor took my blood literally and the lawyers, well you know how that is.

And then on the other hand. On the other hand, it has been a mark of a successful life to leave something of value to those left behind, hopefully something our left lonesome spouse or our children can use to better their position in life.

Over the course of what is turning into a longer than expected life, my mom always said I would die prior to twenty one, I have known several people to be left financially well off upon the demise of their loved one. A few of these very fortunate souls also received intangibles of significant value. One of my childhood friends was left the 'rights' to a numbers operation in a medium sized city and in a few years he was murdered. He had not inherited any character for there was none in his family gene pool.

The stories of misused inheritance are part of American lore and each generation adds more tales of men and women who have the basic skills to make major contributions to the betterment of our human condition, but alas, the wealth and mental ability is wasted in a debauched lifestyle. I read years ago that inherited money is usually wasted away by the third generation. If you have a really smart child, possible one of the worst things you could do for the child is leave vast wealth.

On the other hand, we who know Christ as savior are promised a pure inheritance that will never fade into poverty, one that will produce ever more wealth as the ages roll along. Peter asserts to those of us in Christ that there is "an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you," 1Peter 1:4.

This inheritance is purchased for believers with the precious blood of Christ.
