How Great the Mystery

The Word came down, lowly and sound
For the Father’s heart was yearning
From sea to sea, captivity
Since all their hearts were turning

“He sins, he dies” the law, it cries
Transgressions heavy weight
In man’s domain freedom is vain
Oh tragic, deserving fate

“Turn back, black hearts”, The Word imparts
The voice in the wilderness cries
Repent dark soul, relent control
Be new and revitalized

A mystical plan, God becomes man
How great the mysterious thought
First men denied, then crucified
All part of the heavenly plot

Thy sin doth prod the wrath of God
There’s justice to be served
But wait, what grace, He took our place
Such mercy undeserved

Sin He became, one and the same
Though His lips had never lied
Our hearts You mend, dear sinner’s friend
God and man now rectified

Transcendent love somewhere above
To appease the condemnation
The Christ He died, man’s justified
Oh Great Propitiation

Merit not mine, just love divine
Made free from allegation
Take witness now, the humble bow
Rejoice in man’s salvation
