Have It His Way

Scripture Reading:

Matthew 6: 19-24
19“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 22“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. 23But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness! 24“No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.

Whether it’s McDonald’s™, Burger King™, or any fast food place, it’s always the same—pictures of juicy sizzling meat, covered with fresh fixings between the perfect bun of a perfect burger. If you’re hungry when you see the ad or commercial, the first thing you may taste is the water of your mouth; the taste of a promise made by a flashing TV or a humongous billboard.

But when you finally buy the meal, what do you get? A skimpy patty between a flattened bun, with some lettuce here and maybe some mystery sauce there, served in a grease-stained wrapper. Disappointed? Well, maybe, but then again there’s always that difference between the commercials and what actually comes in the wrapper. It’s the cold stale truth behind every seduction and empty promise that this world makes. In this world, there’s no such thing as the “beer commercial” life that certain products claim to offer. Things break, things rust, and don’t always turn out as good as they seem.

But, unlike the world, God does make us a promise, through His Word, that He will always keep. And that promise is eternity. According to Matthew 6:19-20, God commands us that we should not store up treasures on earth, “where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal,” but instead He tells us that we should “store up treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.”

Sadly, we live in a world that’s driven by empty promises. In fact, many people spend their entire lives chasing after possessions that eventually break and relationships that can live and die as quickly as they’re born, all for sake of fulfillment. Have you spent most of your life gathering the things of this world, rather than the things of heaven? How often have you found yourself serving your own purposes rather God’s purpose? Think about it and about where your heart lies, because it’s much better to have it in heaven than in a world of flattened burgers and grease-stained wrappers.

-David Yuen

Bottom Line: Seek to serve God—you’ll never be disappointed.

Destination Points:

·How important would I consider serving God to be? Is it the first priority of my life or the last one?

·What do I expect from my life? What does God expect from my life? Do my expectations agree with His?
