Humor
Larry Lilly's Letter January 26, 2006
My close friends know that I use humor as a means of coping with many things that would cause a tree in the forest to weep. Be sure that my life has enough 'weeping' events to assure I have no need to buy bottled tears to keep my eyes moist.
Tears have a place in life, but we are not to become so focused on the heartbreak of life that we become overly morbid. I know too many people who live what I call pre-suicidal life. There is a reason that God tells us in Proverbs 17:22 "A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones."
One of Lilly's Home Cures For Dried Bones, is to see the humor in a given situation. Second, I take the time to see humor in the mistakes of others. Dr. George Monday sent a copy of the well traveled "Church Ladies With Typewriters" a collection of typos from church typewriters.
One such mistake caught my eye early this A.M.:
"Ladies, don't forget the rummage sale. It's a chance to get rid of those things not worth keeping around the house. Don't forget your husbands."
Actually this faux pas was subtly placed on my desk by a notorious Blonde who I have known since we were hardly more than children. Said Blonde confesses to loving me dearly, though she still could not give her mother a good answer as to why. Catching the drift of the note on my desk, I searched George's note and placed the following on her computer screen written on a stick em note.
"Irving Benson and Jessie Carter were married on October 24 in the church. So ends a friendship that began in their school days."
Each of these faux pas demands at least a chuckle. Therefore they are helpful in the prevention of dried bones. Yet all true humor contains within a smidgeon of tragedy and vice versa.
A wise husband will find ways to be of value around the house. For many years when The Great Blonde asked me to hand her a screw driver I, in my profound ignorance assumed she wanted a screw driver. I have learned that when a woman asks to be handed a screw driver that is NOT what she wants! And how tragic that marriage really does end far too many friendships!
On my goal list for 2006 I am aiming to be of more value around the house and to by the grace of Jesus remain friends with the wife of my youth. With a little thought you will know these are high and lofty goals.
