Who'd be a minister? I've often been asked,
by those who suspect that the trials are vast.
They ponder the greatness, the glory of God
and contrast the lives of the people who plod.

Who'd be a minister and know what it takes
to keep the church going despite all the breaks,
those who resist all things, afraid of all change,
and badger the leadership with faces deranged?

Who'd be a minister and cop all the flak,
from people who never got off their own back?
Who'd be a minister and sleep in a bed,
with the memories circling of Martha and Fred?

The pay's not too good and the hours are long,
the chorus and hymn debate rages on.
There's people who leave if the service is long
and those who will never admit that they're wrong.
Why worry about relationships out in the world
when the ones in the church leave us all in a whirl?

So who'd be a minister, to help people change,
and surrender their hearts to God to be saved?
Who'd be a minister and share in the joys
of weddings, baptisms, new girls and new boys?
To help people hear, understand and believe
in the person of Jesus, the One who will save?
Who'll comfort the mourners, address the bereaved,
encourage the down at heart and the grieved?

Who'd be a minister, who would be called
to surrender their life for the good of us all?
