Nellie Sue

Shortly after graduating from High School, I started attending a small Junior College near my hometown of Caesar, Mississippi. Being born and brought up in a small hamlet such as Caesar does not lend itself to exposure to many girls to date, mostly because most are kinfolk or seem to be kinfolk and are more like your sister than potential dates. It was at this small college that I met, at least from a distance, the girl of my dreams. Her name was Nellie Sue and she didn't know I was alive.

Nellie Sue had long black hair, a baby skin textured face, dark-brown eyes with long black eyelashes, pearly white teeth, and the most beautiful smile I had ever seen. It was love at first sight!

Then one day there she was, sitting across the table from me at lunch! Sitting there, looking across the table at me, with ketchup all over the front of her blouse from the ketchup bottle I held in my hand. Then I made a fateful mistake-I reached over to try and wipe it off. I thought I was going to die by the look she gave me.

Several weeks later I guess she forgot who the clumsy dope was that got ketchup all over that beautiful white blouse she wore. By arrangement through a friend I was fixed up with a blind date with Nellie Sue. My dreams had come true.

We dated several times, walking to the movie in Poplarville. Life was great and the ketchup incident never came up.

Then it happened! The school put on a talent contest for the students. Having accomplished somewhat the guitar, I signed up with a buddy of mine to enter the contest. He played the Mandolin and I played the guitar. All the student body, including Nellie Sue, was there to judge the contestants by their applause. The fateful mistake we made was playing and singing "I was seeing Nellie home".

Nellie avoided me like the plague after that night of the talent contest. I always liked to think it was because we didn't win. But somehow I imagine it finally dawned on her that I was the guy across the table from her with the ketchup bottle in my hand.

Shortly after the talent contest we all graduated with an Associate of the Arts degree. We went our separate ways and I never came in contact with Nellie Sue again. Its probably best because I never paid to have her blouse cleaned.
