FOR THE GLORY OF GOD

There is so much talk in the Christian life. We turn up at church once a week and listen to people talk, interspersed with some singing. Then at the Wednesday Bible study it’s mostly talk.

Some people even travel miles, then hand over dollar bills, to hear someone talk, at conferences and seminars. “Ah, but it’s uplifting, inspirational,” you may say. True, but does it motivate you for more than twelve hours? The best motivator is the Bible.

How many times do we hear the pastor give a fine exposition of the need to take the gospel to people. But, but, but there’s a good chance you won’t hear him say at the end: “Who’s coming with me on Tuesday afternoon to knock on doors?” So it remains just talk.

Non-Christians put us to shame regarding action. In the news the other day was the story of a young man protesting with Greenpeace. He was out there on the ocean, in a little boat near a Japanese whaler. They fired the harpoon, and the cable knocked him out of his boat and into the sea. He was soon picked up, but the point is he got into action for what he believed. He didn’t sit at home bemoaning the injustice to whales. He did something about it.

In the Middle East, western activists have died for the cause of peace. They were not content to sit at home. They were out there risking their lives. The Book of Acts is full of it!

Today’s Christians, for the most part, huddle in the church bemoaning the non-spiritual status of the world: it’s our fault for not speaking up! Like the Greenpeace guy we must stop huddling and get into action.

We have a far greater cause - the gospel - for which to take risks. It changes lives and gets people off the road to hell and onto the road to heaven.

It’s tiresome listening to Christians sitting in church talking about when Jesus returns. He will, but we have a job to do in the meantime.

The inevitable thought is surely coming. Isn’t this article all talk also? Yes, but I can honestly say I do something every day to spread the name of Jesus.

Most readers here are American. In the US, the name of Jesus should be more familiar than President Bush.

Getting personal, if you believe you have the truth, you must stand for it, proclaim it, broadcast it; tell everyone whose side you are on. Even if you don’t speak directly to the neighbours, give them a tract, get a sign on your car, even on your house. Make sure they know Jesus lives and they are facing eternity. You won’t be popular, but so what. We are not saved to win a popularity poll.

Friends, get into action and get going for Jesus!!
