Corrie Ten Boom, a servant of God, is known worldwide for the sufferings she endured in the German concentration camps and later her release, and her work for God all throughout the world.

Once she was preaching in a church in Munich and she saw a man in a grey overcoat listening to her. As people left the room she saw him coming towards her. She had preached that once we confess our sins, God casts them into the deepest ocean and they are gone forever. Now she saw him coming towards her in an overcoat and a brown hat, but as he came nearer, she could see him in another form, a blue uniform and a visored cap with a skull and crossbones.

Then she remembered the huge room with its huge lights, the pathetic piles of dresses and shoes in the centre of the floor and the shame of walking naked past this man. She could see her sister’s frail form ahead of her. The place was Ravensbruck and the man who was walking towards her had been a guard, one of the cruelest guards. Now he was in front of her, hand thrust out.

“A fine message " he said. “How good it is to know that as you say all our sins are at the bottom of the sea.” And now Corrie who had spoken so much of forgiveness didn't know what to do. She fumbled in her pocket book and did not take his hand. She knew that he could not possibly remember because there were thousands of women in that camp. She was face to face with one of her captures and her blood seemed to freeze.

“You mentioned Ravensbruck in your talk, he was saying “I was a guard there. But since that time I went to on to become a Christian .I know that God has forgiven me for all the cruel things that I did there but I would like to hear it from your lips as well .

Again the hand came out and asked “Will you forgive me?” As she stood there, she thought that her sins had again and again been forgiven by God but now she could not forgive. Her sister had died in that place. How could she erase the memory of that death? How could she put her hand forward to this man who had been responsible for the death of her sister? In her mind there was a great war going on.

But she remembered the Word of God which says that if God has to forgive us, we have to forgive those who have injured us. “If you do not forgive men their trespasses, Jesus said, “Neither your father in heaven will forgive your trespasses.” Now she knew that the forgiveness is not an emotion but an act of a will. She prayed to Jesus, “Jesus, help me. I can lift my hand. I can do that much. You give me the feeling.”

And very mechanically she thrust her hand into the hand of the one who had stretched out to her. And as she did so, there was a great change inside her. There was a healing warmth that flooded her whole being and brought tears to her eyes. And she said, “I forgive you brother, with all my heart.” For a long time they grasped each other's hands, the former guard and the former prisoner.

And she said that she had never experienced God's love so intensely as she did then. She realized that it was not her love. She had tried but she did not have the power. It was the power of the Holy Spirit. As we see in Romans 5: 5, Because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who is given to us.
