HEARTBEATS

Last night
When all was quiet
I rested my head in bed upon my folded arm
And waited for sleep to come to me.
Hearing in my ear the faint beating of my old heart,
I began marveling about the faithfulness
Of this my hidden so crucial organ
Keeping me alive all these many years
From the moment it quickened way back then
Within my mother’s womb with so tender beats
Only angels could hear
On and on making every moment of my personal life possible
Until that now.
And then I had a Nativity thought
And realized that
The sacred baby heart of Jesus
Began beating in his tiny chest when hidden deep
Within the core of Mary
As she made her way, sitting on a gray donkey bumpity bumping
Being led to Bethlehem by that good Joseph.
How wildly it beat when he was born in that dark cave!
How happily it beat when he first tasted Mary’s milk,
And how his heart raced as he played as a boy
Growing up in Nazareth.
How strongly it drummed as he taught the lessons of love
As he walked along the shores of Galilee
And gathered his disciples and apostles.
And the merciful heart of Jesus kept beating on and on
For us all those thirty years of his earthly life
Until it was stopped by agony on the cross of wood
On top of the hill named Golgatha.
Oh so sacred heart!
Here take my wounded aged heart
As a Christmas gift.
I place my still beating heart next to yours
In love.
