That Feeling

I’ve heard it said by more than a few atheists that man is really just an advanced species, nature’s final result of the evolutionary process. They profess that we are merely the end result of millions and millions of biological lotteries. Sorry, but I just can’t believe that.

There are numerous books currently on the market that refute macro-evolution, so if scientific evidence that may support the existence of a Creator is needed, it is available inside these published works.

But the purpose of this column is to address the “feeling” of incompleteness humans maintain. Common sense tells us that there has to be a reason humans hunger for emotional satisfaction from childhood on.

Now I’m sure we all know someone who doesn’t like to be around others. You may have a grumpy, old uncle who likes to just be left alone, completely content to just hang out with his own thoughts and revelations. But even such a preference is an attempt at emotional stabilization, for the uncle has decided his best company – concerning his emotional well-being – is himself.

Yes, animals hang out in packs. Yes, animals seem to enjoy each other’s company. But humans have a certain knack for always needing something more, for no matter high on the evolutionary chart we have supposedly climbed, we never seem to reach that final level of the nature’s perfect being. There always seems to be that intrinsic “feeling” that we are not complete.

As individuals, we never seem to play the perfect game, see the perfect movie, or experience that perfect love. And if we do experience what we perceive to reach that level of satisfaction, we just can’t wait for it to happen again. Happiness is always just the next perfect event away. And it is that pursuit of happiness, one of the most strongest of human traits, that leads me to the conclusion that humans are not complete in and of themselves. In the United States Declaration of Independence, the Founding Fathers found this trait important enough to be included in their document.

It is my firm belief – and the belief of millions of others – that this “feeling” of incompleteness comes from the great chasm (sin) that separates man from the Creator. Since the fall of man (Adam and Eve’s sinful act in the Garden of Eden), humans have not lived as God intended us to live – in constant companionship with our Heavenly Father. Our completeness cannot come from trying to escape our heritage. Humans can’t simply explain away the Creation story or the Creator behind the account.

Jesus Christ came to eliminate that “feeling” of incompleteness. He came to show the bride (us) that there is indeed a wedding in our future – a wedding that will complete our pursuit of happiness. We have been like lost children, but 2000 years ago, our Caretaker made His claim of ownership: “For the Son of Man to seek and save what was lost.” (Luke 19:10 NIV). We need not be incomplete.
