The Authority Of Jesus
By
Calvin J. Moss

Luke 1:30-33 says: And the angel said unto her fear not Mary for thou hast found favour with God. And behold thou shalt conceive in thy womb and bring forth a son and shalt call his name JESUS. He shall be great and shall be called the son of the highest. And the Lord shall give unto him the throne of his father David: and he shall reign over the house of Jacob forever and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

It is appropriate that we talk about the authority of Jesus. Now the word authority means the right and power to enforce laws, exact obedience, command, determine or judge. Jesus Christ was a man of authority. St. Matthew 6:28-29 says the people were astonished at his doctrine for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes. Jesus` words were with power. Even as a child Jesus was full of authority. According to St. Luke 2:52 Jesus increased in stature and favor with God and man. St. John 1:3-4 states: All things were made for him and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. When Jesus calmed the windy storms one disciple said what manner of man is this? Even the wind and sea obey him. John the Baptist said he it is who coming after me is preferred before me whose shoe`s latchet I am not worthy to unloose.

Jesus is the second Godhead of the trinity known as the Word. He is the Word that became flesh. The Jews wanted to stone Jesus because he made himself equal with God but Jesus is God. He is one hundred percent man and one hundred percent God. If Jesus was not God he never would have said “destroy this temple and in three days I`ll raise it up” referring to his body (St. John 2:19). It is this Jesus who gave sight to the blind, this Jesus who made the deaf to hear and the dumb to speak, this Jesus who commanded a dead man name Lazarus to come forth!

In St. Luke 20 as Jesus taught the people in the temple and preached the gospel the chief priests and the scribes came upon him with the elders and spake unto him saying tell us by what authority doest thou these things? Or who is he that gave thee this authority? They did not and would not believe that the authority came from God the Father. When Jesus died at the cross and arose after the third day he took the keys of hell and death rendering satan powerless.

In essence, everything seen and unseen is subject to the divine rule and authority of Jesus Christ. At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow. He is the author and finisher of our faith. Amen.
