Once upon a time or so the story goes, a Christian man sat in his comfortable house on a cold Christmas Eve enjoying all that the Lord had blessed him with. His children were in bed fast asleep with dreams of sleighs, reindeer, and presents under the tree running through their mind. His wife, exhausted from cooking pies, cakes, and cookies of all sorts had also lain down for the night. Completely satisfied with himself, he threw his legs upon the sofa and began to watch television.
Surfing the channels, he came upon a show that celebrated Christmas from around the world. Pleased, he viewed Christmas in Holland, Sweden, Germany and Russia. He learned how Greenland and Iceland celebrated Christmas. Moving to America, he saw the difference between the fried turkeys of Louisiana to the crab cakes of Boston, or the beef steaks in Kansas City. Continuing on, he saw Christmas observed in Hawaii, Guam, the Philippines, and finally in China and Japan. Yet here his countenance fell.
There on the screen was a man with his girlfriend or wife dressed in bright red with a red and white fur lined cap that flopped about his head.
The interviewer asked,“Do you celebrate and observed Christmas here too?”
“Yes.”Came the reply.“We have Christmas, but we just don’t have Christ.”
Shocked, the man began to take stock of all around him. There he saw the brightly lite tree that twinkled on and off giving the room that special glow. He remembered the large smiling face with a white beard that adorned his front door, and the lights that wrapped themselves around everything in the front yarn and house. He saw the presents pilled high under the tree and the plate of cookies that he had munched from left by his children. Even the fake snow with tiny reindeer traces left by the fireplace was there. Then he sadly realized. He too had Christmas, but not Christ.
COMMON SENSE SAYS: Sleigh bells, evergreen trees, and decorations of all sorts may put you in the mood for the season, but nothing will ever be Christmas without Christ.
