I Am Unworthy

Isaiah said: “Woe to me!…I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty." (Isaiah 6:5, NIV)

When Isaiah realized he was in the presence of the Almighty God, his first response was that of shame and of being unclean. The Bible does not tell us, but I imagine that Isaiah fell facedown, trembling, humbled, and awed in the presence of the Almighty God.

Who among us could truly speak in the Lord’s presence? Who among us feels worthy of being in His presence?

Like Isaiah, we should cry out “woe to me,” and understand the extent of our wretchedness. We must be always in reverent awe and fear of the Great and Wondrous God. We must realize how far we are from being holy. We must realize how much we deserve pain and death for our sins.

But there is hope!

Jesus Christ suffered total humiliation, pain, and died on a cross as atonement for our sins. He alone paved the way to a life with Him. He is the way, the truth, and the life.

We must allow God to cleanse us, like the seraph did to Isaiah with a piece of burning coal. As we allow God’s grace to continually purify and refine us, we can then hear Him speak to us.

When God asks the question “Whom shall I send,” we will reply with a resounding cry of “Here I am! Send me!”
