Come Closer
by Dan Blankenship

In 1976, Seals & Crofts came out with a hit love song called “Get Closer”. The opening chorus says, “Darlin' if you want me to be closer to you, get closer to me.” It is a really good song, in case you haven’t heard it. Today, whenever I hear that line in the song, I think about God’s promise to get closer to those who draw close to him (see James 4:8). I don’t think James Seals had that in mind when he wrote the song, but that’s what I think about.

Many of the Christian leaders I have enjoyed listening to have always told people who ask how to get closer to God three things:

#1. Read the Bible – it’s God’s word, and the more we consume it, well there’s just no way we can’t get closer to God.

#2. Talk to Him. That’s how we have personal relationships with other humans. And we are created in His image. It would follow suit that he can listen, just like people.

#3. Put your faith into practice. When we play football, we understand more about football. The same holds true with God. When we do his will, we understand Him on a more personal level.

All three of these items can bring us closer to God, but I would like to add a forth item:

#4. Surround yourself with other believers. The Bible demands that we be Christlike (see 2 Corinthians 3:1-3 and Philippians 2:5-11) and Christians can learn a lot from each other. I have always felt closer to God when I am in a sea of believers, like-minded people who have rejected a worldly view and have an eternal outlook on things.

Concentrating on these four items is a surefire way to get closer to God. And although Seals & Crofts are most likely unaware that there is a guy from Indiana who thinks about his Redeemer every time he hears their hit song, I have to believe that I am not alone in my interpretation. After all, who knows more about love songs than the Creator of all love?
