Or Veggies I Have Known.
There are times when very strange thoughts come into my head. Today, out of the blue, my mind started picturing potatoes sitting in places you would never expect them to be. That did it.
If life were like a garden, the people we see every day could be the veggies that grow. Now, I know you don't think of yourself as a veggie but what about everyone else? For instance, I know a couple of red hot chili peppers. These folks are so enthusiastic about what they do that you just have to get involved. Everything they touch works. Even if something goes wrong, it doesn't matter because these people do not know what it means to quit. If you saw them in church, they would be the ones to volunteer for everything, regardless of the project. That's because the peppers know a little bit about lots of things.
On the other hand, you have your basic potatoes. These are they who do the couch thing, vegging out in front of the TV, night after night. Maybe there's a can of beer in their hands, bag of chips, pizza on the coffee table. On the weekends, the TV is tuned to the mind-numbing hundreds of sports channels. If not there, then these potatoes get spiced up a bit and inhabit the golf links, their boats, playing baseball, football, tennis, bridge, or any number of other things.
Of course, when I have potatoes in mind, there are several varieties to choose from. How about baked potatoes? Angry ones who are mad at the world and all who live here. Don't forget to add the sour cream. Perhaps you like french fries. That's all right. These are the long skinny ones who have fried their brains on whatever the latest "good feeling" pharmaceutical product is available. Okay, how about mashed? Half-baked? Twice-baked? You get the picture.
Corn-on-the-cob is a big favorite. On the stalk, they stand tall and proud. By the time you get them to the pot, they're shucked and cleaned but really short. It's all in the attitude.
I could go on. Um. tomatoes (oops that's a fruit...or is it? I never knew), cucumbers, peas, carrots. Do you know any of these people? I do. All of them.
Now take this picture and put it into your church. Oh oh, that hurts. Do you still know these people? Unfortunately, I do. Perhaps it's time to find out what veggie you are. If you see yourself here, you aren't alone. By the way, just in case you were wondering, Jesus is the microwave that gets you hot!
When I think of what I should be, it's the chili peppers; but I know that much of the time, I turn out to be some sort of a cross between a baked potato and your basic, run-of-the-mill couch potato. One of these days, some kid is going to come into church, see me and yell out at the top of his lungs..."Whazzat? A potato in my seat?".
