Larry Lilly's Letter Monday November 28, 2005

The current 'war' in education circles concerning intelligent design brought an old story to mind that reveals just how convenient God is in times of even legal trouble. Dr. Ralph Sockman told the following story: "A New York law firm engaged a firm in New Orleans to get certain dates from records that would clear the title to some land in that city. The New Orleans lawyer sent back documentation dating to 1803. The New York lawyer wrote back that he had not gone far enough. The New Orleans lawyer eventually sent the following documentation: Gentlemen, please be advised that in the 1803 the United States of America acquired the territory of Louisiana from the Republic of France by purchase. The Republic of France in turn acquired titled from the Spanish Crown obtained by conquest. The Spanish Crown obtained it by virtue of the discoveries of one Christopher Columbus, a Genoese sailor who had been authorized to embark by Isabella the Queen of Spain, who obtained sanction from the Pope, the Vicar of Christ. Christ is the Son and Heir of Almighty God. And God made Louisiana."

The lawyer prevailed back when this brief was written, but he probably would have lost on appeal in today's legal environment, due to the exclusion of the Indian tribes who had used God's land for many centuries prior to the arrival of the Spanish or French. And certainly no one even considered the rights of the animals or bothered to make an environmental impact study and statement. A topographical map and drainage plan would have prevented much of the damage done by Katrina.

The current fits many people are having over the concept of intelligent design make about as much sense as Moses being taught by the ancient Egyptians that life originated from white worms along the Nile River. As with all such ideas the question begs to be asked, "Where did the Nile River come from?" One TV program posits that life as we know it was transplanted to earth by space travelers. And where did they come from? Another uses almost the identical position but uses 'time travelers' in place of space travelers. And of course most of us were taught by our teachers, often with tongue in cheek, that once upon a time there was a big bang in space and presto, the universe including at least the seeds for life as we know it, was in process.

In some theories evolution is said to have a 'Prime Cause' as any form of reasoning comes to the first and the final question, "And where did this Prime Cause originate?"

I have enough space left on this page to prove the fact of creation, if I were as smart as many writers. I do not have the intellectual capacity to prove any such thing. Nor do any of the other adherents of different positions. Whatever you believe about design, you must accept the basic premise by faith. The evolutionists can no more prove his position than can the Jew or the Christian. The Bible tells us "Through faith we understand that the worlds were formed by the word of God." Hebrews 11:3.

Call me what you will but I have more faith in the biblical account than I do any other.

Without a belief in Genesis 1:1 and following, belief in any concept of religion or even of civilization is silly and has no foundation in common sense. Without an ultimate judge, to whom are we accountable? In reality to no one.

Christ truly is the hope of the world as well as the designer.
