Memories of Home
WHERE DID THAT PIE GO?
Our hours are filled with wonder
As we watch the day unfold
We can’t wait to eat
Thanksgiving is our real goal
Talking while we dine
My two brothers remind me
About the time
We stole into the kitchen
And ate all the pumpkin pie
It was morning in the holler
Another thanksgiving day
We always watched the morning unwind
Listening to the radio
Singing with it all the time
Mom had made some extra pies
To the neighbors she did go
She said, “Now you guys don’t touch a thing”
You don’t have to worry
I have the oven set on low
We wandered into the kitchen
The pies all set there in our view
That smell in that kitchen would bless a saint
We must, we must, we must remember
That we are not allowed to touch a thang!
I looked at James, James looked at me,
John looked at us both
His mouth opened, but he forgot to cuss that oath (THANK THE LORD)
Then he said, “Now remember what Mom said”
He knew us like a book
Being the oldest of us three
He tried to calm us down
But I am sorry to say
Me and my brother James were the meanest kids around
Have you heard the old saying?
If you can’t beat em, then you have to join em
My poor brother John did a lot of joining in his day
It made all our days so much better in a lot of ways
We took that pie right off the shelf
On the floor Indian style we did sit
We split that pie in three halves
Our hands were the perfect plate, our fingers the perfect forks
sitting there on that kitchen floor,
We were all just plain dorks.
We devoured that pie in no time at all
Then we went and found the cat
She did a really good clean-up on that pan
I stroked her fur and held her close and whispered in her ear,
“Sweetheart, how would you like to become part of our plan”?
In just a little bit, Mom came back through the door
Looking at that empty pie rack
Her screams became a continuous roar
They were heard all over that holler on that Thanksgiving Day in 56
Me and my brother James, we knew every trick.
Mom yelled,
“Oh my beautiful pie
What happened to my beautiful pie”?
James said, “Mom that cat, that darned old cat
you must have let her in when you went out the back”.
There Old Sadie sat just licking those beautiful paws
Mom turned around put her hands on her hips and looked at her in awe
She said, “I’ll show you, you dumb old cat just how it feels to be a rat”
She grabbed the broom and chased that poor cat from one room to the other
Me and James chased after mom as as fast as we could fly
But poor old John just stood over in the corner and begin to cry
When Old Sadie got tired of running and Mom was out of breath
Mom sanked down in the living room rocker
Very softly she started talking, holding that broom like she was playing soccer
“kitty kitty come to me you good little kitty, or it will be your death
Not a peep or not a purr, not a cat sound we did hear
Old Sadie was too smart for that, for me and James had been her peer
Finally Mom got settled on down and headed back toward the kitchen
Singing a little song as she swished on by, “Over the river and through the woods”
John was searching everywhere for his book
Reading was his thing,
He was called the Library King
Me and James got bored and went outside to explore
Maybe we could get the kids to come out and play
The ones that lived next door.
About an hour later we went back to check on Mom
We peeked in the window to see if everything was still wrong.
There she was in the kitchen singing another happy song
We couldn’t believe it not in a million years
The scene inside that kitchen healed all our fears
There was Mom and Sadie
Just having a big pow-wow
Sadie was having a bowl of milk
Mom was snuggling that cat
and twirling her big fluffy tail
We could not believe our ears as we head these words,
Mom said, “Sadie, can you please forgive me for making such a scene
I had to pretend for just a minute to be a little bit mean
I would never hit you with that broom you know
But those two little brats we love so much had to see that show.
We stuck our heads through the door and Mom said,
“Hi guys, I made two more pies
How would you two like to have a piece of Pumpkin?
Maybe you two can eat a whole one if you just try”.
I grabbed a hold of my stomach
James was about to puke
He said, “No Mom If you don’t mind
I think we’ll wait for lunch”!
We are all getting older now and are seeing our twilight years
Memories of Thanksgiving bring on happy tears
I love them just as much now as I did back then
My brother John just laughs a lot when we remember when
He says, “They say that excitement is food for the heart
With you two around, my heart had the perfect start”.
This Poem is dedicated to my wonderful brothers
James and John
