I can see her now - face glowing with anticipation, fingers turning into all thumbs as she fumbles with the satin ribbon and bow, then impatiently tears off the colorful birthday wrappings to discover the unknown!

"Oh Mother, it's beautiful! Just beautiful!" I can hear her say as she holds up the blue cashmere sweater, gives me a big hug, then pirouettes gaily around the room clutching the sweater lovingly to her breast!

But it never happens! Instead, the blue cashmere sweater, that I had spent hours shopping for, was exchanged
the next day for a yellow silk blouse imprinted on the back with a big black dragonhead.

So much for my imagination! Yes, I was disappointed, but then I've learned that teenagers are hard to please. But when it came to my husband returning his beautiful brown leather jacket that I bought him last Christmas, and exchanging it for some ugly camping gear including boots; well, that's something else again!

I was crushed! Not to mention hurt and angry! And, for the first time in my life I empathized with God.

Think about it for a moment! God, the Great Designer of the universe, who designs the rainbow, creates sunsets, color coordinates the autumn leaves, and fashions the beautiful fanned tail of the peacock...cannot satisfy Man!

The brunette bleaches her hair blonde, and the blonde dyes her hair red! God made me white, but I suffer through hours of laying in the sun to make myself bronze; my friend, on the other hand, who is bronze, uses man-made lotions and cosmetics to try and lighten her skin.

Take the oriental, for instance. She will have surgery done on her eyes to make them round, and the caucasian will use eye liner and makeup to give their eyes the slanted look of the Oriental!

If one has straight hair, they get it permed; if it's curly, they get it ironed! Want blue eyes instead of brown? Buy colored contacts and Poof and Alakazam!

If I get disappointed, hurt and frustrated over my loved ones dissatisfaction, how do you think God must feel every time we try to exchange what He has given us for something else?

Since God created Man in His own image, it must be heartbreaking to see His greatest creation pluck, pierce, dye, bleach, cut, tattoo, puncture and desecrate their bodies for the sake of "their" idea of beautification!

The Bible describes God as having white hair. "His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow;" (Rev l:14 KJV). No wonder! Putting up with a Human Race that can never be stamped "Satisfaction Guaranteed"...it's easy to understand.

Yes, my friend, I humbly admit...I can empathize with God.

Marilyn, I read this the other day and loved it, but was just dashing by and didn't have time to comment at the time. It is RIGHT ON target. I agree that you have a beautiful and smooth style of writing, with great wisdom and insight.
Looking forward to more.

This is so true, I wonder what is the problem. I have been challenged to search myself if I am trying to exchange what I had been given with something else. Thanks for the insight.

Think about it for a moment! God, the Great Designer of the universe, who designs the rainbow, creates sunsets, color coordinates the autumn leaves, and fashions the beautiful fanned tail of the peacock...cannot satisfy Man! If God can't satisfy man, why do we spend so much time trying to gain man's approval? Wish I had the answer. What a thought provoking article, Marilynn. Makes me realize anew that I need to keep working on my own attitude of gratitude, and willingly offering a great deal more sacrifices of praise.
