Whale Watch
By Margie Hord
Hours “wasted”
watching, waiting
squinting
over the waves
till the reward
comes:
a blur of black
a flash of fin
and a feather of foam!
The curving
splashing
behemoth
pleases us
with a few
swift encores.
For this?
(this fleeting moment
of adrenalin surging)
for this
we spent
time and strength,
for this dreamed?
What fools we seem.
Yet
is this not life?
When least expected
the flash, the blur
and the surge within
make the long journey
worth the while.
