Often when I write this weekly email, I am moved by the big events of our world. Terrorism, injustice, globalism, and of course, the questions of life, meaning and purpose, figure often. But there is a season for everything, so today I want to raise what might seem like a much less important issue. But having said that, this issue will, I am sure, polarize my readers. I feel compelled to raise this, as my daughter told me that it was a hot and divisive topic in her HSC modern history class today. The question that must be raised is whether top load washing machines are better than front load washing machines.

Now if you are an Aussie, this might seem a no brainer ie. a question that requires no thought. You, as an Aussie, use a top load washing machine, as your mother did and as her mother did before her. Of course there may be the odd bloke in there too. You are thinking that the top loader has that one unparalleled and essential feature - you can throw in an extra sock after 10 minutes if you forget it the first time around. Probably over 90% of Aussies have top loaders, so why even ask such a question?

Well for the Europeans that read this email, they are in a state of bewilderment and shock. They are screaming the virtues of front loaders: they use about half as much water; they are much gentler on your clothes; they don't have lint filters because they don't create lint; they wash your clothes so much cleaner; and they leave your clothes dryer. In addition, they take up less room and now they sometimes have a dryer built in as well, so you don't need two machines. They are even easier on your back. Sure they may take a little longer to do a cycle, but for the Europeans there is no comparison - and that late sock can always go in the next load,

So who is right? Well from this Aussie's view, it is clear who is right - the Europeans and front loaders. When we were first married, we had a small space and had no choice but to go European. And once this Aussie family was faced with the truth, we quickly repented as we were converted to the wonder of front load machines. But don't believe me, try for yourself - and that's exactly what most Aussies have not done. Have you noticed how often we get stuck in a certain rut, and sometimes we need to have someone rattle our cage to show us there is another and better way.

The spiritual point is obvious. Most people in this country think God is an unnecessary, irrelevant and untruthful adjunct to their otherwise busy and full lives. But guess what? Most have never really checked out God and what He is really about. Open a Bible, ask a Christian friend a question, experiment with prayer, and who knows, you too may discover that you have been missing out!
