Larry Lilly's Letter Wednesday November 9, 2005

How much of your life have you spent waiting for 'things to get better?' If you're like me, too much is the most accurate answer.

Institutions have been founded and operate regularly trying to figure out how to successfully wait for things to 'get better.' I have lost track of hundreds of people who want to help this ministry when things 'get better.' One group and said, "We are going to get involved when the current gas price situation 'gets better.'"

Commenting on this progress killing mind set, Pete Silas, Chairman of Phillips Petroleum said:

"We can't wait for the storm to blow over, we’ve got to work in the rain."

Solomon said, "He that observeth the wind shall not sow." Ec.11:4.

It will be a sad commentary when we come to die, to have wasted our life waiting for a perfect time. In life the only time we really have is now, we, as Christ, must work the works of Him that sent us while it is day for the night cometh. Years ago I became a pilot in order to spread my ministry to a wider base in less time. I soon learned to silliness of thinking you could remain a private pilot and fly only in good weather. I faced the choice of fooling around waiting on the clouds to dissipate or going on to Instrument rating and better equipment in order to go most of the time. It was a good decision that brought many rewards and many people touched by the Lord that I would have never met otherwise.

The principle is simple: Life will always present obstacles, valid reasons for ordinary people to stop. I was young and foolish and chose to rise above ordinary. To be ordinary requires little or no effort, very little intelligence and just a dab of courage.

Jesus encourages those of us who claim to be His, to launch out into the deep, to depend on His power to enable us to rise above the cud chewing crowd and demonstrate what the power of the Holy Spirit can do through surrendered men and women.

When I was twenty years old, a wise man who had settled for being ordinary and accepting obstacles as the rain of life that dictated waiting for clear skies, advised me; "Larry, it would be wise if you waited until this situation clears up and then launch out in ministry." I admit there have been a few times when I caught myself thinking he was right. The problem is that had I taken his advice, I would have waited until I was 62 to start to obey the Lord in following Him into the area of service to which He had called me.

When God wants you to do something, He knows whether it is raining or not. He does not expect you to wait until "things get better." NOW, even in the rain!
