Larry Lilly's Letter Wednesday October 26, 2005

Ogden Nash said it well:

"Progress might have been alright once, but it has gone on too long."

The good Lord has seen fit to permit me to travel and attempt to stir up the saints to ever higher pitches of fervency for His work. I enjoy this as being a part of encouraging people to set aside apathy and really start living is a high in and of itself.

As I mentioned on yesterday I spent several days in Littleton, New Hampshire, New England's version of Lake Wobegon. Not only did I breathe in the ambiance of this hamlet nestled in the White Mountains as the Chamber of Commerce is given to say, I imbibed the high octane of the famous Thayers Inn during my stay. A stay at this historic place caps off the Littleton experience. Littleton has more modern digs, with all of the 'plastic' amenities, but the Thayer has Julian.

Julian is the controller of a human named Erin, who works the night shift and is a very pleasant woman who I assume to be in her middle 30's. Erin was willing to let the peasants share the joy of nine month old Julian. It's not often that hotels have a nine month old heart stealer at the check-in desk, but then the Thayer is not your normal run of mill place.

Julian is quite a boy. I would adopt him in a New York minute, as you know New York minutes are much faster than say, a Philly minute.

I was suffering the pangs of home sickness for 1 year old Max and the dear Lord helped the pain by permitting me the joy of Julian. Erin seemed totally pleased that such a strange person as me, was being strengthened on the inside by her 9 month old Julian.

Oh, get me right, I love children, but we are talking dogs here, real down to earth dogs. Julian is a nine month old Springer Spaniel and he is convinced that the world, including the Thayer, is his apple and he goes all out to welcome all comers. Of course one year old Max will go bonkers when he catches the aroma of Julian on my clothes. This is good for he will appreciate me all the more when he has the aromatic evidence that other, knowledgeable canines pay homage to my greatness, by licking my hand and pawing around my pant legs.

I, for one, think it shameful that hotels etc have to advertise their acceptance of such wonderful creatures as Julian, with the modest, 'Pet Friendly' designation in their advertisements. Pet Friendly should be a given. I have lived a long time, been to many places, some of them downright dangerous, and I have never in all my put togethers met a person who doesn't like dogs, who ever amounted to anything. Even Richard Nixon, cut your hand off Larry, had Checkers, the lovable Cocker Spaniel.

Not allowing pets is sort of like some churches posting signs implying that unless you're dressed like you have already been in heaven for six months please do not enter these hallowed premises.

If this type of religion is progress then I submit it has gone too far for too long!!

And for your information, I am fairly certain that Jesus has at least one Airedale Terrier since New Years Eve last.
