Who Will Roll Away the Stone?

Mark 16:1-3 and when the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him. And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulcher at the rising of the sun. And they said among themselves, who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulcher?

Who will roll away the stone? These words jumped off the page at me! Have you ever started to do something and then had second thoughts? Have you ever felt the Lord was leading you in a certain direction, but as you got closer the obstacles looked impossible? In this passage the Mary’s faced quite a large obstacle, a stone covering the tomb of Jesus.

How do you react to what seems to be obstacles? Does a warrior spirit rise up within you? Do you take it to God and allow Him to work out all the details or do you simply give up? Do you prepare the spices to anoint the savior, or simply put them back on the shelf intimidated by the stone in your path?

So often we will be led, by the Lord, in a direction that seems adverse to those around us. They will not understand and may even vocalize their opinions, but we must not be deterred from the calling of God. We must not turn away from the path of our calling. We must prepare the spices and make our way forward.

Perhaps the obstacle in your path is a rebellious child or a spouse that has lost focus. Every direction we turn we can see sin, but how are you handling it? Have you thrown in the towel or do you claim the promises of God as your own? Even though the situation may appear bleak, it is time to prepare the spices and head toward the tomb!

Look at the 1st three scriptures in Mark 16:1-3 Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him. And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulcher at the rising of the sun. And they said among themselves, who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulcher?

Notice three things:

1. They prepared the sweet spices for anointing the body of Jesus.
2. Early in the morning they went to the tomb
3. They asked who would roll away the stone?

Do you see it?

They gathered their spice and went! They didn’t sit down at the table and worry and fret over how in the world they would get the stone rolled away. They didn’t call all the sisters in the church and tell them they had a problem. They didn’t say, “well we might as well not bother because there’s no way you and I can move that stone by ourselves.”

No, they got everything together, rose early in the morning and went! It wasn’t until they were on the road that they discussed the stone issue. But notice they didn’t stop and give up and go back home! It doesn’t even say they spent a lot of time discussing the issue!

It says: vs. 4 and when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great!
So, here is the short of the story!

Regardless of what situation you are looking at today! Be it children, job, family, parents, dreams, neighbors; take a look at what the Mary’s did! They were not swayed by the circumstance! The stone was great, but they went in faith! They did what needed to be done and headed to the tomb!

We serve a BIG GOD! Our God is still in the stone moving business! Perhaps the situation seems dead! He can open the tomb! Perhaps the situation seems impossible! He can move the stone!
