We don’t like to see it, do we? See what, one may ask. Poverty. We pass by it on a daily basis, going home to our blessed lives and tying our lives back into a pretty, little, neat bow, and carefully pulling the quilt back over the remnants of the less fortunate.

Until the Gulf Coast Tragedy. The Gulf Coast Tragedy brought to the forefront the heavy, creeping despair that the poor find themselves in on a daily basis. Not because of the Hurricane, but before the Hurricane. God uncovered the poverty that America and Americans keep nestled under a beautiful quilt, arraigned in mediocre subsidies and allowances that appease for a moment, but leave a generational impact of indigence, that blind eyes simply can not see.

God swept through the states of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama uncovering the stifled screams of a people which went unheard, ignored and pushed aside year after year, time after time. God allowed a momentary settling, while we went on with our lives assured that the Hurricane’s impact was as it always was, devastating to the remote communities within its path; that was day one. Day two began to loosen the bonds of muffled screams and obscene generational monetary gaps as the flood waters began to rise, so then did the voice of despair. Day three, three days of darkness, communications silenced, hunger settling in and a thirst for compassion more so than liquid water began to sound an alarm. Day four, babies in soiled diapers, mass confusion, survival tactics for some, and the ignorance of others begin to take form, dead bodies in the street, all the while God is still holding the quilt back, uncovering the despair for the world to see.

In those four days, God gave a voice to the voiceless, all the while mending a yarn of compassion that would stretch from the plains of New York, to the golden hills of California that would beckon Texas, and Tennessee, Ohio and Minnesota, Michigan and the Carolinas, and everywhere in between to heed the call.

Let’s stop asking “why didn’t help come” and start embracing, “why not” for the why not establishes the plan of God, because in the “why not” is the evidence of what did occur. Why not, you say? Because all things work for the good of those who are the Called, according to His purpose. Still you ask, what is the good in this situation?

It’s good that America was forced to see the plight of their people, it was good that the world witnessed the humbling of a super power, it was good that those who have gone ignored were so close/and are so close we are literally reaching out to them. It is good that this tragedy began a discussion of race relations, poverty, despair, and the loss of hope. It was good that we as Americans were forced to humble ourselves and thank God for a light to turn on, or a toilet to flush. The little things taken for granted.

It was good because those of them who had been covered have now been revealed. Luke 12:2 says, For there is nothing covered that shall not be revealed, neither hid that shall not be known. To God be the Glory, for the things he has done.
