Nostalgic thoughts occur and oft' rejuvenate the mind;
Hot gingerbread, and pickles made from watermelon rind!
The cottage cheese and buttermilk (no better could be found)
Sufficed if there was simply NO hot gingerbread around.
The chicken dumplings fluffy (not the flat and stringy style)
Would make your innards leap for joy, and if they could, they'd smile!
There's 'hoppin John' and rhubarb and collards in the pot,
And cornpone big as wagon wheels...rich golden... piping hot!

Then after such a repast, the old folks dipped their snuff;
They'd gorge their lower lips as if they'd never get enough.
The bigger kids were rowdy, disregarding screaming 'aints'
The uncles talked 'bout baseball and the babies wet their pants.

But ALL were tuned for Granny's voice, melodious and clear,
"Y'all stop what you are doing NOW...hot gingerbread is here!"
