“Truly Free”
Wednesday, March 28, 2005 †
“So you also must consider yourselves dead to
sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus” (Romans 6:11).
Free: adj. able to act at will; not hampered; not under compulsion or restraint.
Most of us today have the luxury of being free and to live in freedom; we are no man’s slave, or by any means forbidden to worship, speak, and vote. These are only some of the things we are free to do in our nation. After all, we do live in the United States of America, the land of the free and the brave. Unfortunately, many citizens of other countries do not have this luxury of freedom. They are held bound in many ways. And what if I tell you, at times here in the USA, you are not free either? You, like citizens of other nations, share in the same moments of captivity and bondage through out days of your life. Would you believe me?
Jesus said, “If you obey my teaching …; you will know the truth and the truth will set you free” (John 8:31-32).
What kind of freedom is Jesus speaking of? Is it the same sense of being free that we are defining here? No, the freedom that Jesus speaks of is the freedom from sin. “Everyone who sins is a slave of the sin,” (John 8:34) and no soul on earth today is safe from this slavery. Sin is not biased to any country or race, no matter what the naysayer say. Sin keeps you in darkness; it makes you want to hide from God because you believe you are not holy. Sin drowns your soul by making you feel elements such as: guilt, deceit, worthlessness, abandonment and sometimes worse. Sin terrorizes your spirit; it paralyzed your being. And so, by definition of the word free it can be concluded that yes, sometimes we are not free. Blessed are those who seek for forgiveness from the Father, for they are granted once more the ability to be free.
