I recently read an article in the newspaper where Conservative Christian broadcaster Pat Robertson has called for the United States to assassinate Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, calling him "a terrific danger." “That we should engage in a covert operation if necessary and have him assassinated.”
To me this is appalling to even think this way. This is a man that calls himself a Christian, reads the bible and believes it is the word of God calling for us to plot to assassinate a leader of another country.
If I remember correctly the second command calls us to love our brother, and even our enemy . It doesn’t say a thing about picking and choosing who we should love.
It may be a difficult situation that we are dealing with here, but has he not limited what God can accomplish if we trust in him alone? To call on The United States to engage in a covert act to assassinate someone is still murder. If he really had his head on right he would call on Christians to take note of what is going on and pray that The Lord intervenes and resolves the problem.
The thought of plotting to kill someone reminded me of the situation that King David took part in when he plotted to kill Ukiah the Hitite,just so he could have Bathsheba ,Uriah’s wife, for himself.

The next morning David wrote a letter to Joab which he sent by Uriah.

In it he directed: "Place Uriah up front, where the fighting is fierce. Then pull back and leave him to be struck down dead."

Another verse from the bible that comes to mind is 1Cor:13

1 If I speak in human and angelic tongues 2 but do not have love, I am a resounding gong or a clashing cymbal.

And if I have the gift of prophecy and comprehend all mysteries and all knowledge; if I have all faith so as to move mountains but do not have love, I am nothing.

If I give away everything I own, and if I hand my body over so that I may boast but do not have love, I gain nothing.

3 Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, (love) is not pompous, it is not inflated,

it is not rude, it does not seek its own interests, it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over injury,

it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth.

It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Now, is what Pat Robertson is saying the clashing symbol?
You can rise to the top of the ranks as a Christian Broadcaster but if you can’t reason love into what you are saying, what you say is worthless.

Another verse that comes to mind is Romans 13:1

1 Let every person be subordinate to the higher authorities, for there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been established by God.

This includes those authorities that Have been established in other countries.
So, if Pat Robertson is reasoning that we should assassinate Chavez, he is going against the direct authority of God by desiring this to happen.
