DID GOD MAKE A MISTAKE WHEN HE MADE YOU?
Did God make a mistake when He made you? Do you frown when you look in the mirror? Are you satisfied with your looks? Are you pleased with your skin color? Would you prefer your dark skin to be lighter? Would you prefer your light skin to be tanned? What about your hair? Is it the right color, thickness or texture? I mean, before you dye it, fry it, color it, tease it, weave it, grease it or blow dry it? Do you like your natural hair, or does it embarrass you? Do you shave your scalp because you dislike the tight curls, or limp locks that tend to grow on it? Do you wear a hat between barber or beauty shop appointments to hide something you’re ashamed of underneath? Can we talk?
Many of us just don’t like ourselves! Some people would have a credit account with a plastic surgeon if they could afford it. It’s not a sin to be image conscious, but vanity is of the devil. Satan would have you alter everything God blessed you with. Reshape your face, sculpture your eyes, reduce your nose, reduce your hips, increase your hips, lighten your your skin, darken your skin, decrease your lip size, increase your lip size, put harsh chemicals on your hair and on your face. It’s not unusual for Caucasian women with straight hair to curl it or for African American women with curls to straighten them. If you have tightly curled hair, repeat after me, “my hair is not nappy, it’s curly and beautiful!” If your hair is straight and thin, it's not stringy, it's fine and delicate.
I’ve heard and participated in numerous debates through the years about the good hair, bad hair syndrome. I remember going to great lengths (this included water, Duke hair dressing and a stocking cap) to put waves in my hair. We debate about what looks best: curly, straight, wavy, blonde, brunette, braids, locks… Rest assured, God did not make a mistake. No two people are the same, neither are any two heads of hair. Every strand of hair our God created is unique and good. When He created Adam and Eve and declared His creations very good, their hair was a part of that goodness. And guess what? We’re all descendants of Adam and Eve. Whatever grade, texture, color, thickness, length or shape of your hair, God designed it and it’s all good!
There are Caucasians who feel their skin tones are superior to those of people of color, yet they go to beaches and tanning salons to work hard on their tans. A tanning salon owner once told me that she had brown skin customers, also. So, “whites” aren’t the only ones who darken their skin. Remember the phrase black is beautiful? It is, but so is pink, brown, tan, yellow, red, white and every exquisite skin shade in between. God didn’t make a mistake when He made you. His creations are a diverse tapestry of color, shades and tones. None of them are superior to the other.
As believers of God and followers of Christ, our ultimate value isn’t determined by the worldly whims of fashion designers or a current trend. Our value is in the sacrificial blood of The Lamb that covers us. If Jesus said it, it’s good! If God ordained it, it’s beautiful. If the Holy Spirit anoints it, it’s powerful! Praise God! Christians are a blessed people, not because of color, hair, fashions or anything else except God’s grace and mercy. God hasn’t made a mistake yet! You are who He wants you to be as long as you’re walking with Him. Brother Kenya Branch 1999
