Packed clay & summer dust bake undisturbed in the midday heat, where small bony fists pounded leather into submission and dreams of grandeur inspired lazy afternoon heroics. Parental steam vicariously willed strenuous victories & courageous battles despite the short attention span of their youthful moppets.

The roar & cheers are but a faint whisper now, as empty cups and tattered confection wrappers hold hands with uninspired breezes and dance lethargically under faded bleachers. Foot prints & tire tracks criss-cross faint chalk lines where tomorrows legends stood but a moment ago, pondering the sno-cone that would numb their tongues as well as their bruised egos. The occasional dust devil springs from nowhither to roar across the infield like a Wilderbeast fleeing from danger, then it too, is gone.

Sadness fills the space in my heart where the boy who once dreamt, left to become a man.
So I stand on the diamonds of August and dream.
A lonely man on a late Summer day,
And I’m winning.
