The Soul Man

Are you filled with the Spirit? Is your soul on fire? What exactly is spirit and soul? Are they the same thing? Does it matter? What is the relationship between God’s Spirit and our’s? Do we have a spirit distinct from God’s?
1 Cor 2:1-16
1 And I, brethren, when I came to you, did not come with excellence of speech or of wisdom declaring to you the testimony of God.
2 For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.
3 I was with you in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling.
4 And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power,
5 that your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.
6 However, we speak wisdom among those who are mature, yet not the wisdom of this age, nor of the princes of this age, who are coming to nothing.
7 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden which God ordained before the ages for our glory,
8 which none of the princes of this age knew; for had they known, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
9 But as it is written: "Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him."
10 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the profound things of God.
11 For what man perceives the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.
12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is out of God, that we might perceive the things that have been freely given to us by God.
13 These things we also speak, not in words which man's wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spirituals with spirituals.
14 But the soulish man receives not the things of the Spirit of God, for unto him they are foolishness; and is not able to know , because of the spirit they are discerned.
15 But the spiritual judges all things, but himself of no one is judged.
16 For "who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct Him?" But we have the mind of Christ. (Lit. Trans.)
What is the spirit? It’s a question I like to ask. I get varied responses. What do you think? What do we mean by team spirit or the spirit of a season? Please notice v.14. It is the key
verse of this passage.


Most of your translations say the natural man, but this is a serious mistranslation. The word is Psuchikos, literally, the man of the soul or the soulish man. That would lead us to ask, what is the soul?
There has been a lot of debate on the relationship between the soul and the spirit.
Interestingly the two words are different but related.
Psuche, and its Hebrew equivalent, nephesh, means a breathing one. Pneuma and its Hebrew equivalent, ruach, mean breath. You guys out there who are into any kind of mechanical jobs should recognize the word pneumatic, driven by air. The devise using the air to work would be doing the breathing.
Hang in with me here while I get the technical stuff out of the way, but we need to understand this to know what Paul is talking about.
An ancient author used the figure of the wind in a ship’s sails. The sails did the breathing; the wind is what was breathed- what was driving them. What is it that drives you? What is the wind in your sails? What is it that you really want down deep inside? That is your spirit. We get our word psychology from Psuche. That is your personality, your psychology, your mind, emotion and will. This is what is driven by your inner wind, your inmost want to’s. The thoughts and intents of the heart, as Heb.4:12 puts it.

Ezek 36:26 "I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.
27 "I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them.

This equates the spirit with the heart

Rom 2:29 but he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the Spirit, not in the letter; whose praise is not from men but from God.

By the way, if you are a Christian, you are an adopted Jew, by blood adoption into the family of Abraham as if you were born into it. Just a side thought.
If we have a nebulous concept of what the spirit is we will have a nebulous walk in the spirit. When we are told to be filled with the spirit what does that mean? You can’t really say if you’re not sure what the spirit is. This is why there is so much questionable stuff going on in Christ’s name currently.
The spiritual man is one who is driven by the inner heart’s desires of God. This is communicated to us by Him putting His Spirit into us. We begin wanting what God wants in any given situation or time.
What then is the soulish man? That is one who is dominated by his intellect or emotions. He believes that if he understands it, he has it. Or the emotional one who feels or doesn’t feel saved. Have you ever heard that one? The understanding and the feelings follow salvation not precede it or bring it about, they are the boxcar and caboose not the engine or coal car. I had an older friend who was fond of saying that the last part of a man that gets saved is his head.
Note here that the man who is dominated by his intellect or emotions will not receive. It isn’t that he cannot, he WILL NOT. It’s a decision not a condition. And its not that he cannot understand, that’s another word in Greek, it’s that he cannot know in an experiential or absolute sense. The word there is ginosko, the base meaning of which is, to penetrate, to know in an experiential sense. The reason why a nonbeliever doesn’t understand the Bible is because he doesn’t consider it worth the mental effort or time involved to grasp it fully. This decision results in a condition. This is not referring merely to a nonbeliever, but also to any who think that if they intellectually grasp something or if they feel it deeply they have it. This was the error of the Gnostics and it precludes faith. We can see Fundamentalism and Pentecostalism in this, the domination of the intellect and the emotions. A person can put their faith in what they believe about Christ or what they feel rather than in Christ himself. A pastor once told me that I was arguing with the “intelligencia”. I countered that intelligence and education can merly give a man the means to adequately defend his misconceptions. He said that had never occurred to him.
The mature see things in a different light than the immature even though both may have a grasp of the same facts. The spirit is the thoughts and intents of the heart, what is driving you, what you really want down deep inside. The profound things of God must be plumbed by having His wants at heart. The mind must be the well-trained servant not the master. the 11th century Anselm of Canterbury expressed it in the formula fides quaerens intellectum ("faith seeking understanding") The emotions must also be subservient not in control. Victory is by the spirit.

Zech 4:6 So he answered and said to me: "This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: 'Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,' says the LORD of hosts.

What is easier to do, given that the physical and mental effort is the same, some thing you’d want to do or some thing you’d rather not? Why?
In the same way, discipline, as necessary as it is, can only empower us so far. If a ship hits a doldrums, rowing it will only get you as far as the strength of the rowers holds up, but if the wind (spirit) fills your sails, you can go around the world effortlessly by comparison. This is what is meant by the filling of the spirit.
Spiritual maturity is nothing more or less, than how ever much God’s heart desires have supplanted your own.

John 3:5 Jesus answered, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
6 "That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
7 "Do not marvel that I said to you, 'You must be born again.'
8 "The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit."

This is why the Law and good works can’t perfect us, they depend on our effort and strength, like that ship in the doldrums, rather than God’s wind in our sails.

1 Cor 6:17 But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.

This is the nature of what is refereed to as union

1 Cor 2:15 But the spiritual judges all things, but himself of no one is judged.

This brings in an interesting conundrum. Aren’t we not supposed to judge?

Matt 7:1 "Judge not, that you be not judged.
2 "For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.
3 "And why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye?
Luke 6:37 "Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.
1 Cor 11:31 For if we would judge ourselves, we would not be judged.
1 Cor 6:2 Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world will be judged by you, are you unworthy to judge the smallest matters?
3 Do you not know that we shall judge angels? How much more, things that pertain to this life?

How much of this do we see happening? Can you imagine if this was followed through on?

Rev 20:4 And I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was committed to them. Then I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God, who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received his mark on their foreheads or on their hands. And they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.

Note that Jesus said “Judge not…lest YOU be judged. The one who judges himself wanting of worthiness and has thrown himself on God’s mercy is the spiritual one. This, plus maturity in that faith, is what qualifies him to judge, as the rest of these passages point out. We are expected to judge, but on the basis of what God wants not how we see it. An example of this working out in the church is in:

1 Cor 14:24 But if all prophesy, and there come in one unbelieving or unlearned, he is reproved by all, he is judged by all;
Heb 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
Prov 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart; and lean not unto your own understanding.
6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct your paths.
7 Be not wise in your own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.

Finally, we come to one of those passages that Christians don’t really believe;
1 Cor.2:16 But we have the mind of Christ.
Do you believe that you have Christ’s mind? It is important that you learn to depend on this truth and operate on its basis.
One time I was at a conference and after one session there was a question and answer time with the speaker. I expressed disagreement with some of what he had said. A couple of men came up to me later and remonstrated me for doing that. I asked them if they believed the Holy Spirit would guide us as James said He would, James 1:5. They said yes, so I challenged them to go aside for ten minutes or so and pray that God would show them which of us was wrong. I promised to abide by what they said and would apologize if they came back finding me in error. I meant it and didn’t know how they would answer. I sort of expected them to find for the speaker, but they came back and with a confidence that took me back they said that I had been right. What got me, and was a real surprise, was the conviction they expressed. It was clear they were sure and that this came from the Holy Spirit. Here is a practical lesson for dealing with various church and personal matters.
This is a mater of pure faith. You won’t feel it. You won’t have, necessarily, voices or flashes going off in your head. You will have God’s response to your faith in what He has said.
In conclusion, we must judge and be led by what we know to be God’s heart desires, not by what we think or feel or to depend on feelings or our own understandings, trusting that we indeed have His mind working in us. That is pure faith. May His wind be what fills your sails.

For those who think the spirit and the soul are the same or we don’t have a spirit till we are indwelt by God’s.

Properly, the spirit or breath of the day. I don't know either, but that's what it says. God expects us to ask the questions then scratch our heads and pray answering them.
