The cost of gasoline in Oklahoma City and nearby Shawnee where I live has risen so many times since 2000 that I have lost rack. Sending a First Class letter has risen in my life time from, believe it or not, two cents to three cents to five cents to eight cents to ten cents to thirteen cents to seventeen cents to twenty cents to twenty-three cents to twenty-seven cents to thirty cents to thirty-one cents to thirty-three cents to thirty four cents to thirty-seven cents…WHEW! I keep up with the cost of stamps because I am a collector. That said, I was very hesitant to write these facts down because I hear that they are talking about another rate increase possibly up to as much as forty-five cents for a half-ounce First Class letter. Those in the know say that in a matter of time, say ten years, or by 2015 a First Class letter will cost 75 cents maybe even a dollar!

While on military duty in May, June and July of 2005, I tried to make a local telephone call in the Seattle, Washington area, but was unable to complete it because I had deposited only a quarter in the Sea-Tac airport’s payphone. Because I had not used a pay phone in such a while, I was completely unaware of the increase in the price of a telephone call to 50 cents. Inflation seems to spare nothing to anyone.

Thinking through all of the necessities and luxuries of American life, I came to the realization that there exists one form or interaction that has never, ever known a rate increase—that is, to pray to God.

It does not cost a man, woman or child any more this day to send a pray than it did a half a century ago or 5,000 years ago when Abraham did it. Likewise, there has been no delay or cutback in services either, a busy signal or someone to inform you that there is a downed service line or satellite. God is on the line 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 or 366 days a year. He even answers the calls on holidays and loves conference calls!

Considering the fact that calls made to God are completely free, prayer is the greatest bargain in the universe. I don’t know why more people don’t get on board and try to ring Him up more often! It is completely free of charge!
