In 2 Timothy 4: 1-8 NRSV, The Apostle Paul makes several statements which lend themselves to close scrutiny for the purpose of self examination. I hope that you will actively engage the text for a few moments as you apply them to your own life.

1. Paul addresses Timothy as “my dear son”. Who are your mothers and fathers in the faith and whom are you mentoring?

2. Paul writes “night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers”. For whom or for what do you pray constantly, or with which your mind is preoccupied most of the time if you are not yet a praying person?

3. The Apostle refers to the fact that he serves God “as my forefathers did, with a clear conscience”. How does it feel to have a clear conscience? What is it like to be burdened with guilt?

4. The passage makes reference to Timothy’s tears. When last have you cried, for what reason, and how did you feel afterwards?
5. Further on in the same sentence, Paul writes “I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy.” What fills you with joy? When last did you feel this way?

6. Both Eunice, Timothy’s mother, and his grandmother, Lois, are referred to as women of sincere faith. Who in your family has a strong and sincere faith? Can you be described in this manner?
7. Timothy is reminded to “fan into flame the gift of God” which he received when he was ordained or consecrated by Paul. Are you doing this with the gift for lay or ordained ministry that you have received to build up the people of God?

8. The well known verse, “For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline,” is found in this passage. When are you likely to be timid and what would it be like to operate more in the Holy Spirit’s power, love and self-discipline?

9. Timothy is admonished to “not be ashamed to testify about out Lord”. Where is it easy to testify concerning your faith and when is it more difficult?

10. St. Paul invites his son in the faith to join him in “suffering for the gospel, by the power of God”. Is this your experience and how do you respond?

Prayerful reflection on any passage of Scripture requires us to be aware of the historical context and literary license, to consider how the first readers or listeners were likely to respond, but in the end, it is a matter of asking the Holy Spirit for ongoing revelation and self-application. Then, it will easier to journal thoughts and feelings for later consideration. This incorporates your story into God’s larger Story.

I pray that you will make the time every day to spend time with God in the prayerful engagement of God’s Word. The benefits are boundless.
